ISLENET is holding its 2006 Conference dedicated to the Benefits of the use of Sustainable Energy Systems and their integration in island communities. The two-day event takes place on 28-29 March 2006 at the Scotland House (Rond Point Schuman 6) in Brussels and is free of charge.
The Conference is funded by the Intelligent Energy for Europe Programme of the European Commission and is co-sponsored by the Western Isles Council.
The main objectives of the ISLENET Conference are:
- The future strategy for accelerated penetration of sustainable energy systems in islands communities,
- The ways to promote and demonstrate leading edge sustainable energy technologies in European islands, and
- The strengthening of the ISLENET network of local island authorities.
ISLENET was created in 1993. It is an initiative of the Islands Commission of the CPMR (Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions) and the Western Isles Council and has enjoyed the support of the EU Institutions.
ISLENET is a network of European Island Authorities, which promotes sustainable and efficient energy and environmental management. It helps its members to:
- adopt local energy management strategies and environmental policies
- develop renewable energy and environmental projects
- develop partnerships of cooperation and sharing of experience
- access information on energy and the environment
These activities have an important effect on local economic development and promote a an integrated approach to sustainable economic development.
